Why does hair loss occur during menopause? We’ve touched on this subject before in our blog titled “The Truth About Red Clover '' but today we are going to dive a little deeper. During menopause, a women’s body goes through many physical changes including hot flashes, mood swings, insomnia, and (our topic of the day) hair loss. There are two main reasons a woman may notice menopausal shedding: hormone imbalance and DHT build up.
Hormone Imbalance
As a woman gets older, she loses estrogen. Estrogen is a hormone that naturally helps your hair stay in the growth phase of the hair cycle. When a women’s estrogen levels drop during menopause, the growth phase becomes much shorter, and the shedding phase longer, causing hair shedding to occur. A decrease in estrogen can also trigger an increase in androgens, which are male hormones that can cause hair loss, the most common being DHT.
DHT Buildup
DHT is a natural hormone that builds up in the hair follicle, which can stop blood flow to the follicle from happening, and over time will lead to hair shedding. This type of hair loss begins as overall shedding and thinning, rather than noticeable bald spots. It’s usually first noticed on the hair part or sides of the head.
