Bodybuilding and Hair Loss

A common debate in the fitness world is “does bodybuilding cause hair loss?” Although hair loss caused by heavy weightlifting can’t be totally ruled out, it is not the act itself that causes the negative side effects. There are many factors that result in hair thinning and shedding, and it starts with each person’s specific genetic makeup. 

How Hair Loss Happens


In general, a biological male naturally has more testosterone in their bodies than females. That is why males are typically bigger and stronger. Testosterone naturally builds muscle mass; therefore, bodybuilders will often take supplements and steroids that increase testosterone production. While it will help speed up the physical benefits of weightlifting, unfortunately an increase in testosterone also means an increase in a hormone called DHT.


DHT, or dihydrotestosterone, is the most common cause of hair loss in both men and women. The 5-AR enzyme that is present in all of our bodies, converts testosterone into DHT. This DHT builds up around the hair follicle and over time, if not treated, the hair follicle will weaken and die, causing permanent hair loss.


When testosterone is increased due to supplements and steroids, this 5-AR enzyme converts more testosterone into DHT, resulting in hair thinning and shedding.


How to Treat Hair Loss

Balance Workouts


Since excessive weightlifting can lead to hair loss, one way to help with hair thinning and shedding is to balance workouts with cardio. Although cardio will not directly lower your T levels (testosterone levels), weight loss in general can help with balanced hormones.
