We’ve all seen the DIY pins on your Pinterest board all about ways to get healthy hair. They can be posts that promise “Hair Growth Formulas” using bananas and eggs. We’ve seen anti-dandruff cleansers using lemon juice and coconut oil. But some of our favorites are when “experts” suggest using soda on your hair to restore shine. Like, what? Although these are fun things to try at home on a slow Friday night, chances are they aren’t going to really give you healthy hair. However, fear not! We’ve got the secrets you can unlock to get healthy hair all year long… without a trip to the dairy aisle.
Don’t Over Wash Your Hair
This is typically a problem with male clients, but it’s an issue that spans the spectrum. It’s hard not to wash your hair every single day, especially when you are a super active person who tends to sweat. However, it can be detrimental to hair growth and keeping your natural oils in production. Use a shampoo that was formulated to be used every other day, like our Evolve and Revolve lines. This helps to keep the natural balance of your hair, while also helping to regrow and repair your hair depending on your specific needs.
If you don’t want to give up your daily wash routine, then we do suggest you switch between an active healing line (again, like Evolve or Revolve) and a natural, sulfate free cleansing shampoo. Don’t use the same shampoo and conditioner every single day for an extended amount of time. Your hair will become “immune” to the effects and you will end up doing damage in the long term.
Get Regular Hair Cuts
Setting a regular routine with your stylist is imperative if you want to maintain healthy hair. It’s especially important if you’re looking to grow it out like Rapunzel. After your hair reaches the dermal layer of your skin and continues to grow, it’s already considered dead. This dead hair is the only visible thing you will see, and it can be damaged due to many different factors. These factors include environmental elements, hair color, chemical treatments, heat styling and more. This damage then leads to split ends and breakage, which hinders the ability to grow long hair. The breakage and split ends will make your hair look shorter than it really is.
In order to maintain the look of longer hair, make an appointment with your stylists every 6-8 weeks. Have a conversation with them to make sure that you’re on the same page when it comes to your hair goals. If you’re wanting to grow it out, be sure to let them know you’re just looking for a trim. Some people are hesitant to get regular trims when they want to grow their hair because they’re afraid it will ruin any progress. However, that’s not the case and building that trust with your stylist will give your peace of mind.
Drink Lots of Water
We know, we know. It seems like this tip is on every quick-fix list out there, but it’s there for a reason. Drinking water is vitally important to not only your overall health, but for you hair health, too! Did you know almost 25% of the weight of a hair strand is made up of water? That’s why you should drink lots of it to regenerate healthy cells that grow long, strong hair. Just like our bodies thirst for water, so does our scalp and hair. Proper hydration will help to prevent brittle, dry hair. Plus, it’s just so good for your body. We’ll say it again… drink more water!
Use Aloe Vera In A Pinch
There’s a reason why aloe vera leaf extract is one of our main ingredients in all of our shampoo treatments and conditioners. The healing powers of the aloe vera plant are seemingly endless. For hair loss and healthy hair purposes, aloe vera is great for soothing inflammation and repairing damaged hair and skin. Aloe vera contains something called proteolytic enzymes which repair dead skin cells on the scalp. It’s also a natural conditioner that leaves hair smooth and shiny. If you’re using Zenagen regularly, then you’re getting a healthy dose of the aloe leaf goodness with every wash. There are lotions, creams and masks you can try on your hair and scalp as well, but be weary of using too much. You don’t want your hair looking or feeling greasy.
Use Silk Pillow Cases
It seems like a luxury that only the rich and famous can afford, but fear not! Silk pillow cases are more inexpensive than you think, and will do wonders for your hair. When you lay your head down on a silk pillowcase, it produces much less friction and static than a regular cotton or poly-blend material. This friction can take a toll on your hair overtime and cause irritation and damage to the hair cuticle. The silk material is also less drying than a typical pillowcase, so hair can retain moisture much better. There are also major benefits for your skin that can come with changing up your pillowcase, which you can read more about here.
